Principle #6-Move to ACTION!

July 4th, 1776 was the birth of the United States as an independent nation. We claimed our independence from England and Congress adopted The Declaration of Independence. This day reminds us to appreciate how lucky we are to be Americans with freedoms and opportunities our country offers.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty. and the pursuit of Happiness.” –  The Preamble to the Declaration of Independence

While many of us have opportunities, there are still some of us that don’t. All of us, as citizens of the United States, can change the direction of our country. We want all people to have equal opportunities in education, health, social justice, housing, and career opportunities.

We have the freedom to exercise our first amendment rights by protesting for equality. We also have the right to vote. This is an election year in our country. We hold the future of our government in our hands. Please register to vote. Follow your heart and demand systemic change. Vote for leaders that have compassion and that will make the changes needed for our black and brown communities. All people deserve the opportunity to live the American Dream. And all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

As we celebrate the Fourth of July with picnics, barbeques, and fireworks, remember the freedoms we have as Americans. Please celebrate safely and take care of your family and friends. Have fun, be kind, be grateful, and be safe.
